A Few Ways to Fix Minor Computer Problems Yourself

We have all probably heard stories about people ringing a computer helpline with a problem that could have been fixed by something as simple as plugging something in. This can be a very embarrassing situation and perhaps more importantly an annoyance because it wastes your time.

Computers and laptops are pretty amazing pieces of machinery however they are also very susceptible to hiccups such as freezing or crashing. Rather than reaching for the phone straight away there are several tricks and processes you try first.

An extremely situation computer users find themselves in is trying to open a programme and the computer has frozen. Generally the explanation for this is the programme, for whatever reason, is not responding. In most situations there is a very simple solution to this error.

The Lifesaving Combination

If you press the CONTROL, ALT, and DELETE keys at the same time, this will open the computer’s ‘task manager’ window and a list of the programmes you have open will appear. Select the programme that is frozen and choose the option to ‘end task’. This will close the programme and usually take with it the error that was stopping the programme opening. Generally these are minor or temporary hiccups in your computer’s system, so when you try and open the programme again it should open without a hitch.

Another trick that will save you a lot of computer frustrations is to simply restart your computer. If your computer is playing up, such as freezing, running really slowly, or if programmes keep crashing on you, your first port of call should be the restart button.

It Could Be Quite Simple

Restarting your computer gives it a chance to reset its programmes and to smooth out any glitches it may have in its operating systems. It is kind of like giving it a chance to wipe its slate clean and start fresh. Laptops often benefit from being restarted as sometimes users do not fully shut the computer down on a regular basis.

Another problem that can be solved by you without any real computer savvy is wireless internet connections. These can sometimes be very sensitive and can drop the connections when you are mid use. Similar to the restart principle, the first thing to try before panicking is to shut the connection down. You can do this by either turning off your computer or laptops wireless connection signal, disconnecting on your laptop or PC, or by turning off the modem at the wall. This will give the systems a chance to reset themselves and regain the connection.
